Kent County, Maryland – has contracted with AXIS to provide geospatial solutions for Emergency Management. For E911, AXIS is providing 1” = 200’ geocoded planimetric mapping, DTMs, 1 meter topography and true color – high resolution digital orthoimagery. AXIS is linking together map objects with the telephone database information which allows 911 dispatchers to instantly locate the location of a distress call anywhere in the county.
When a 911 call is made in Kent County, a computer monitor will automatically display a detailed map showing the dwelling or structure from which the call has been made.

In addition to the dwelling, the dispatcher will see …

  • the physical address of the dwelling
  • driveways leading to the location
  • fencelines or other hazards preventing emergency access to the location
  • sidewalks indicating other points of access to the location
  • nearest fire hydrants
  • swimming pools, lakes and ponds for sources of water

When a 911 call is made from a cellular phone in Queen Anne’s County, the computer monitor will display the same detailed map described above with the geographic location of the cell call displayed as an icon. This information could be quite helpful in the case of a deer hunter who has fallen out of a tree stand, in the middle of hundreds of acres of woodlands, and has called 911 on their cell. Dispatchers will now be able to precisely locate the caller and better understand, most importantly, how to get to them quickly.

This scenario will involve off-road travel and knowing where the nearest trails, paths, farm field lanes, creeks, etc. are located can make a ‘life-or-death’ difference in the response time.
